US Marshals Apprehend 74,222 Fugitives in 2024, Among Them 5,337 Murder Suspects
In 2024, U.S. Marshals apprehended over 74,000 fugitives, including 5,337 individuals suspected of murder.
The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) reported that it arrested more than 74,000 fugitives during the 2024 fiscal year, many of whom were sought for violent crimes. Among those apprehended were over 5,000 murder suspects.
“These numbers are more than just statistics; they represent the relentless efforts of our dedicated personnel to bring fugitives to justice,” stated USMS Director Ronald L. Davis. “Each arrest plays a vital role in fostering safer communities and showcases our steadfast dedication to public safety.”
The USMS indicated that, besides homicide suspects, nearly 10,000 sex offenders were arrested, including those facing failure to register charges and sexual assault.
Additionally, 6,623 individuals identified as gang members were taken into custody, with various operations aimed at reducing violence and countering gang activity leading to the confiscation of over 5,000 illegal firearms and hundreds of pounds of illicit drugs. The agency emphasized its commitment to dismantling organized crime networks, frequently collaborating with local and federal law enforcement. A collaborative task force arrested over 1,000 fugitives tied to money laundering and drug trafficking operations, including international syndicates.
One of the main initiatives of the agency in 2024 was Operation North Star, a multi-month operation targeting violent offenders in ten high-crime metro areas. Conducted from May to September, the operation resulted in the arrest of 3,421 fugitives, which included 216 individuals charged with murder, 803 with assault, and 482 for weapons-related offenses. The operation also led to the seizure of 534 firearms and substantial quantities of narcotics, such as more than 550,000 fentanyl pills, highlighting the connection between violent crime and drug trafficking.
The USMS also underscored its success in tracking and capturing fugitives wanted internationally, having apprehended 1,743 foreign nationals in the U.S. on charges that ranged from violent crimes to organized drug trafficking.
