US News: Teen arrested for shooting tourist in Times Square and firing at police officer
A teenager, aged 15, has been arrested just outside New York City after shooting a Brazilian tourist in Times Square and firing at a police officer while fleeing. The teenager was taken into custody at a house believed to be linked to a family member in Yonkers, nearly 24 hours after the shooting that started in a sports shop and then moved onto the street in Manhattan.
At a press conference on Friday evening, New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban described it as an “actual miracle” that no one was seriously injured in the shooting, calling it a bold act of criminality in a busy part of the city. The suspect has also been linked to an armed robbery in the Bronx and a prior shooting in Times Square.
According to police, the suspect and two other youths were trying to steal a jacket from the store and fired at a guard and accidentally hit a Brazilian tourist. The victim received 13 stitches for the wound at a local hospital.
