US to Implement Tariffs on Canada and Mexico Regarding China Starting February 1
The United States has announced a 25 percent tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, and a 10 percent tariff on China, according to the White House.
Beginning on February 1, the Trump administration will activate these tariffs in response to the countries’ involvement in the trafficking of illicit fentanyl into the U.S., as stated by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on January 31.
The tariffs will be set at 25 percent for Mexico and Canada, while a 10 percent tariff will be applied to China.
Leavitt noted that these tariffs arise from President Donald Trump’s concerns about these nations in relation to fentanyl, as well as the ongoing issue of illegal immigration from Mexico and China into the United States.
The press secretary remarked that Canada and Mexico “have permitted an unprecedented influx of illegal fentanyl that is claiming the lives of American citizens and also affecting illegal immigrants entering our country.”
