Volodymyr Zelenskyy starts important US trip with a tour of ammunition factory | International News

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has begun a crucial trip to the US this week by visiting an ammunition factory in Pennsylvania.

The facility produces essential munitions for Ukraine’s struggle against Russia.

During his visit to the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude and emphasized the need for more support.

Zelenskyy’s agenda in the US includes speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York and holding discussions with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington.

Zelenskyy has been advocating for the US and other Western allies to authorize the use of longer-range missile systems to target deeper into Russia. However, approval for this has not yet been granted due to concerns about potential unintended consequences.

He will also present his “victory plan” in the US, which includes the importance of long-range weapons systems.

This trip is crucial for Ukraine, as the outcome of the US presidential elections in November could impact their relations with Washington.

A recent TV debate revealed differing perspectives on supporting Ukraine against Russia, with potential shifts in policy depending on the election results.

The area around the plant was cordoned off for Zelenskyy’s visit, with heightened security measures in place.

Supporters waving Ukrainian flags greeted Zelenskyy’s motorcade as it arrived at the plant.

Vera Kowal Krewson, a first-generation Ukrainian American, expressed mixed feelings about the necessity of such facilities for global protection.

Laryssa Salak, a second-generation Ukrainian American, welcomed Zelenskyy’s visit as an acknowledgment of the workers’ efforts.

She lamented the division among Americans regarding support for Ukraine’s defense and clarified that such funding benefits American workers through manufacturing facilities like the ammunition plant.

The Scranton plant is a key producer of 155mm artillery shells in the US, instrumental in providing support for ground forces.

In response to Ukraine’s high demand for these shells, US production has increased significantly to meet the needs of the conflict.

Efforts are being made to boost production from 40,000 to 100,000 shells per month to support Ukraine effectively.
