10% of WestJet Fleet Grounded Following Severe Hailstorm in Calgary
WestJet reports that 16 of its planes have been grounded following a severe hailstorm in Calgary earlier this week.
The Calgary-based airline states that these aircraft, which account for 10 percent of its fleet, require significant repairs and inspections before they can resume operations.
The carrier also indicates that 84 flights were canceled on Wednesday, with 106 cancellations on Tuesday and 58 on Monday.
Calgary International Airport was severely impacted by hail on Monday evening, resulting in the closure of parts of its domestic terminal for repairs for an unknown duration.
A video captured by a traveler shows water flowing from the ceiling near a boarding gate, with pieces of what seem to be tile falling to the ground.
An Air Canada spokesperson mentions that their Calgary operations have returned to normal and they were able to use their largest planes to transport stranded passengers.
