13 dead and 44 injured after tanker truck collides with bus in Ivory Coast

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast—A tanker truck crashed into a bus in northern Ivory Coast, resulting in the death of 13 individuals and injuring 44, as reported by the Transportation Ministry and local media on Saturday.

The collision between the bus and the truck happened on Friday night on the highway between Bouake and Korhogo, two major cities in the north of the country. The narrow road due to a freight truck parked without indicators was mentioned by Police Secours, a platform that monitors fatal accidents in the country.

“The impact led to a fire of alarming intensity between the bus and the tanker truck,” stated Police Secours.

The Ivorian Press Agency and the state television channel Radiodiffusion Television Ivoirienne confirmed the report and the death toll.

Due to poor road conditions and careless driving, road accidents are a common occurrence in Ivory Coast. The Transportation Ministry reports that over 1,000 people lose their lives each year in road accidents in the West African country.

Authorities introduced a point-based driver’s license system last year, where each driver starts with a total of 12 points that can be deducted gradually based on violations. Additionally, cameras were installed on the main roads of the country to penalize offenders.
