5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Taiwan, No Damage Reported Yet
TAIPEI—Taiwan’s weather administration reported that a 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck just off the sparsely populated east coast county of Hualien on Monday. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of damage.
The quake was felt in the capital, Taipei, and had a depth of 23.9 km (14.9 miles), according to the weather administration.
Taiwan is located near the meeting point of two tectonic plates, making it susceptible to earthquakes.
Back in April, Hualien experienced the biggest earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years, resulting in nine fatalities and over 900 injuries, as well as numerous aftershocks.
In 2016, over 100 people lost their lives in a quake in southern Taiwan, and a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake claimed the lives of over 2,000 people in 1999.
