5 Candidates Poised to Overcome Final Obstacle in Liberal Leadership Race
Today is the deadline for candidates to submit their final payment to remain in the running to replace Justin Trudeau as Liberal leader. It seems that the candidate field is now complete.
The last $125,000 installment of the $350,000 entrance fee is required by the end of the day, making it a significant barrier to entry for such a short competition.
Campaigns for Chrystia Freeland, Frank Baylis, and Karina Gould have all confirmed that they have already made their final payment.
Ruby Dhalla announced on Twitter Sunday evening that she has submitted her last payment to the party.
Mark Carney’s campaign has stated that he will make the final installment payment today.
The candidates are set to participate in two debates early next week in Montreal, one in English and one in French.
There are only three weeks remaining in the race before the party announces its new leader on March 9.
Carney’s leadership campaign has reported raising over $1.9 million from more than 11,000 donors.
Some campaigns have not disclosed their fundraising totals yet.
Elections Canada is expected to release the initial fundraising numbers for all leadership candidates soon.
