Vance, Waltz Face Off in Vice Presidential Debate
The U.S. vice presidential candidates engaged in a civilized debate on Oct. 1, contrasting sharply with previous presidential debates this year.
Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz defended their policies without direct confrontations, aiming to connect with voters. The debate aired on CBS and remains their only one before the upcoming November elections.
Previous debates included a heated exchange between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden in June, leading to Biden’s withdrawal and nomination of Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris and Trump faced off on Sept. 11 without further debates authorized.
East Coast Port Strikes Come to an End
The week-long East Coast port strikes over pay disputes have concluded after the International Longshoremen’s Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance reached a deal. Around 45,000 workers returned to work after the alliance agreed to a 60 percent pay increase on Oct. 3.
The strikes had the potential to cost the economy $540 million a day, according to The Conference Board, making the resolution crucial for productivity.
Prosecutors Unveil Revision of Trump’s Election Case
Prosecutors revealed a revised case against former President Donald Trump, alleging conspiracy to interfere with the 2020 presidential election results. Special Counsel Jack Smith stated that Trump’s actions were as a private individual, not protected by presidential immunity.
Despite a Supreme Court ruling granting him immunity for actions taken while in office, the trial, challenging VP Kamala Harris on Nov. 5, is imminent. Trump vehemently denies any wrongdoing in this matter.
