A Comprehensive Analysis: Exploring the Claims Surrounding Genetically Modified Crops as the Ultimate Climate Change Solution in Agriculture

As climate change advocates continue to criticize farmers worldwide, some are using this opportunity to promote genetically modified (GM) crops as a solution. In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in the language surrounding GM crops, with many university articles and research studies claiming that they are more environmentally friendly than organic crops. The World Economic Forum, for example, states on its website that GM crops can be engineered to capture carbon dioxide more efficiently and store it in the soil, making them beneficial for addressing climate change.

Due to severe drought conditions and concerns about fertilizer usage, governments that have historically banned GM crops are reconsidering their stance. The European Commission, for instance, has tested the possibility of revising its rules to allow some plants bred with updated gene-editing technology. Currently, 26 countries have either partially or entirely banned GMOs in agriculture, including European nations like France, Germany, and Italy, as well as India, Russia, and China. An additional 60 countries have imposed significant restrictions on GMO use.

However, skeptics of GM crops, especially advocates of organic agriculture, are raising concerns about the earth-friendly claims made by supporters of GM crops. Zahid Adnan, the founder of The Plant Bible and an advocate for organic farming, emphasizes that GM crops should not be viewed as a silver bullet for addressing all aspects of agriculture’s impact on climate change. He believes that organic farming plays a crucial role in addressing climate concerns by focusing on building healthy soils, promoting biodiversity, and minimizing external inputs.

One of the selling points of GM crops is their alleged ability to require less water due to engineered modifications. However, despite claims that GM crops can thrive with up to 25% less water, recent drought conditions have put these claims to the test. Both GM and organic crops have been severely affected by drought, with the majority of corn and soybeans planted in the United States being GM crops. Drought predictions for these crops have resulted in lowered production estimates. Similarly, gene-edited crops in Argentina have also struggled with drought, leading to significant reductions in corn and soy projections.

Supporters of GM crops argue that they can use less fertilizer and emit fewer greenhouse gases than conventional crops. However, organic crops, which are grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, also offer environmentally friendly benefits. By using practices like mulching and efficient irrigation techniques, organic crops contribute to water conservation, an important concern in regions facing water scarcity due to climate change. Additionally, organic crops can improve soil health, sequester carbon, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Critics of GM crops also raise concerns about the use of chemicals in agriculture. The reputation of GMOs has been tarnished by incidents like the Monsanto-Roundup controversy, where GM crops resistant to glyphosate, a chemical found in Roundup herbicide, were released. This led to lawsuits and settlements related to the alleged cancer-causing effects of glyphosate exposure. Trust is a significant issue when it comes to GM crops, as many people question the integrity of players in big agriculture, such as Bayer and Corteva, who dominate a significant portion of the global seed market.

In conclusion, while proponents of GM crops tout their environmental benefits and potential solutions to climate change, skeptics argue that organic farming practices offer equally, if not more, environmentally friendly solutions. The debate continues, with GM crops facing challenges in proving their drought tolerance and the public’s skepticism of the agricultural industry’s motives.
