A Comprehensive Analysis: Identifying the Organizers of Anti-Israel Rallies and Understanding Their Objectives

The rallies arise from a blend of underlying dissatisfaction and skilled organization, often fueled by disinformation, according to a risk analyst. Since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack and Israel’s subsequent declaration of war, Canada and other nations have witnessed a consistent series of protests both against Israel and in support of Palestine. Various ideological groups are leading the movement, advocating for the destruction of Israel and claiming that Canada is complicit in “genocide.” Pro-Palestinian, leftist, and student organizations are collaborating and using social media to announce events and spread their messages. Phil Gurksi, a 30-year veteran of Canada’s intelligence community, believes that the protests’ magnitude and regularity stem from a combination of underlying discontent and skilled organizing. Gurksi acknowledges that some of the anger is driven by disinformation. He also points out that while extremist groups are taking advantage of the conflict for their own gain, the majority of participants are simply angry individuals. The rallies aim to raise awareness and exert political pressure on the government to support a ceasefire or distance themselves from Israel. However, Gurksi, an expert in Islamist extremism, expresses concerns that the current situation is fueling anti-Semitism and may lead to violence within Canada.
