According to Statistics Canada, Levels of Food Insecurity Increased in 2022
Statistics Canada reports a rise in food insecurity levels in 2022 due to peak inflation.
According to data from the Canadian Community Health Survey, 15.6 percent of households experienced some level of food insecurity in 2022, after stability from 2017 to 2021.
This percentage increased from 9.6 percent in 2017 to 11.6 percent in 2018.
During the pandemic years, household food insecurity prevalence was slightly lower and stable, dropping to 8.5 percent in fall 2020 and 9.1 percent in 2021.
In 2022, in addition to a rise in food insecurity prevalence, there was an increase in severity as more households reported moderate or severe food insecurity.
Statistics Canada also observed an increase in the number of Canadians living in moderately or severely food insecure households in the Canadian Income Survey data collected in the first half of 2023.
