Accusations made against Glad Bags Manufacturer for false ’50 Percent Ocean Plastic’ Claims

The ACCC has taken legal action against a prominent Australian brand of plastic bags, alleging misleading claims of using recycled “ocean plastic.” Clorox Australia Pty Ltd, the company behind GLAD-branded bags, is accused of using plastic collected from villages in Indonesia, not from the ocean as claimed.

ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb stated that the packaging of the bags, including imagery and color choice, gave the false impression that the bags contained plastic waste from the ocean. The company now faces declarations, penalties, and other legal actions.

Despite small qualifying statements on the packaging, larger bags for garbage prominently displayed the claim of being made from “50 Percent Ocean Plastic Recycled Garbage Bags.” Clorox has since decided to halt the sale of these products starting July 2023.

In a bid to crack down on misleading environmental claims, the ACCC has been actively pursuing cases like this. Consumers are advised to be wary of such claims and make informed purchasing decisions based on accurate information.
