After a strong earthquake killed 13 earlier this month, Taiwan is now shaken by a cluster of earthquakes.

TAIPEI, Taiwan—Early on Tuesday, Taiwan was hit by a series of earthquakes, with the strongest one measuring 6.1 magnitude, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey. As of now, there have been no reports of any damage or casualties.

These earthquakes occurred following a 7.4 magnitude quake that struck the island earlier this month, resulting in 13 deaths and over 1,000 injuries. The epicenter of that earthquake was along the coast of rural and mountainous Hualien County. It was the most powerful earthquake in Taiwan in the last 25 years and was followed by numerous aftershocks.

According to the USGS, the 6.1 magnitude quake on Tuesday had its epicenter 28 kilometers (17.5 miles) south of Hualien, at a depth of 10.7 kilometers. The other earthquakes, ranging from magnitude 4.5 to 6, also occurred near Hualien.

Despite experiencing strong earthquakes, Taiwan has managed to minimize the impact on its 23 million residents due to its exceptional earthquake preparedness. The island has stringent construction standards and widespread public education initiatives on earthquake safety.

In 1999, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan resulted in the death of 2,400 people.
