Air Force General-Turned-Congressman: China Reduces Warning Time for Taiwan Invasion

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) has expressed concern over the frequent presence of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) fighter jets and warships near Taiwan. He believes that China’s aim is to desensitize Taiwan to military activity, making them less prepared to respond when China attempts to seize control of the island. In an interview with NTD News’ “Capitol Report,” Brig. Gen. Bacon emphasized the United States’ moral obligation to help preserve Taiwan’s independence. Despite being a self-governing democratic country with its own laws, China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has implied plans to forcibly take control. The PLA regularly conducts military exercises near Taiwan, aiming to intimidate the island and make them accustomed to such activities, reducing warning time for a real attack. Brig. Gen. Bacon stressed the strategic importance of supporting Taiwan and called for stronger ties with the island. He also highlighted the need for the United States to address human rights abuses committed by the Chinese regime against minority groups like the Uyghurs, Tibetans, and Falun Gong practitioners. Brig. Gen. Bacon considered the fact that he was targeted in a suspected Chinese cyber intrusion attack as a badge of honor, indicating that he was making an impact with his statements.
