Airport Sharing Runway Across US-Canada Border to Shut Down
ROSEAU, Minn.—The Piney-Pinecreek Border Airport, located near Roseau, Minnesota, and Piney, Manitoba in Canada, will permanently close on Friday after seven decades of operation. The airport, known for its runway that straddles the border of the United States and Canada, faced challenges due to low usage and high maintenance costs.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced in a news release that the airport’s international agreement, which allowed for its operation, expires on Dec. 26 and will not be renewed by the owners. The airport, which originally opened in 1953 with a grass runway and was later upgraded to a paved runway in 1978, is one of six airports along the US-Canada border, but the only one with a paved runway.
Popular among American travelers heading to Canada for hunting and fishing trips, the airport also had a unique feature allowing staff to move between the two countries for work without going through customs.
