Alberta Premier Smith Plans to Introduce Legislation on School Pronouns After September
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced that her government will be introducing legislation concerning pronouns in schools after the start of classes in September.
Smith mentioned that the new policy, which mandates parents to be informed when children aged 15 and below wish to change their names or pronouns at school, will be proposed during the fall legislature session that commences in late October.
Her remarks come approximately three weeks before most Kindergarten to Grade 12 schools open for the academic year.
Smith also stated her intention to bring forth legislation for a series of policies she initially outlined in January. These measures include limiting trans youth’s access to gender-affirming healthcare, prohibiting transgender individuals from participating in female sports, and necessitating parental consent for sex education and adjustments to names and pronouns in schools.
LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have expressed their intent to challenge the new provincial policies in court, following similar legal actions in Saskatchewan.
