Alberta Premier Suggests Partnering with Quebec to Strengthen Provincial Independence

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is suggesting collaboration between her government and Quebec’s to increase provincial autonomy within the federation. She believes both provinces have a shared interest in combating federal government overreach in areas of provincial jurisdiction.

The report, titled “Report of the Advisory Committee on Quebec’s Constitutional Issues within the Canadian Federation,” containing 42 recommendations, was submitted last year.

In the letter dated March 21, obtained by The Epoch Times, Smith expressed her province’s willingness to support many of the suggested measures and proposed starting discussions with Quebec and later with other provinces to enhance provincial autonomy.

“It is clear that Alberta and Quebec have significant shared interests in countering federal government overreach into provincial matters of jurisdiction,” the letter reads. “As democratically elected leaders of Alberta and Quebec, I see an opportunity to pave the way for a new era in Canadian federalism.”
