All New Buildings Required to Have Gender-Specific Toilets

Women and equalities minister Kemi Badenoch has revealed plans to prohibit new offices and shopping centers from offering gender-neutral toilets.

According to Ms. Badenoch, new offices, shopping centers, and other public buildings will need to provide separate toilets for males and females under the proposed legislation.

The minister stated that the new regulations aim to eliminate the increasing prevalence of gender-neutral toilets and promote privacy and dignity for both men and women.

Additionally, public buildings like office blocks, shopping malls, cinemas, restaurants, and leisure centers will be required to install distinct toilet facilities for men and women, as defined by biological sex.

Alternatively, buildings can opt for self-contained universal toilet cubicles equipped with sinks and hand dryers.

Ms. Badenoch emphasized that the new rules will prioritize women’s specific biological, health, and sanitary needs.

Last week, the minister highlighted concerns that gender-neutral toilets could contribute to girls developing urinary tract infections due to discomfort in using shared facilities with boys.

‘Ensuring Single-Sex Spaces Are Protected’

Ms. Badenoch emphasized that the proposed regulations underscore the government’s commitment to safeguarding single-sex spaces for all individuals.

Following a consultation last year, where 81% of participants supported the idea of separate single-sex lavatories, the proposed rules were developed.

The policy applies to large public buildings and venues undergoing major refurbishment but exempts schools, residential homes, and children’s centers.

Currently, all schools in England and Wales are mandated to provide separate toilets for boys and girls aged 8 and above.

Housing minister Lee Rowley echoed the importance of upholding safety, privacy, and dignity for all individuals through appropriate toilet facilities in public spaces.

The government anticipates that the new policy will positively impact various groups, such as reducing wait times for disabled individuals and enhancing privacy and safety for women and transgender individuals.

Policy Criticised by Mermaids Charity

Mermaids, an LGBT charity, criticized the government’s plans, emphasizing the necessity for gender-specific and gender-neutral facilities to accommodate the diverse needs of all individuals.

Health Secretary Victoria Atkins also recently announced plans to modify the NHS Constitution to provide patients in England with the right to request treatment on single-sex wards.

Notably, a report by the Policy Exchange think tank emphasized the risks women face in the NHS due to the prioritization of gender over biological sex.

Overall, the government’s focus on upholding single-sex spaces in public buildings underscores its commitment to ensuring privacy and dignity for all individuals.
