Amazon Canada Announces Closure of All Seven Warehouses in Quebec

Amazon Canada has announced the closure of all seven of its warehouses in Quebec over the next two months.

The online retailer will be laying off 1,700 permanent employees and 250 temporary workers in the province.

This decision comes in the midst of strained labour relations with unionized employees at the multinational’s warehouse in Laval, Quebec, a suburb of Montreal.

In May, Amazon opposed the workers’ accreditation with the Confederation of National Trade Unions, but in October, it lost its challenge at the province’s labour tribunal.

The company emphasizes that the closure of the Quebec warehouses was a difficult decision and is not a response to the unionization efforts.

Amazon will return to its previous business model in Quebec from 2020, which involved using third-party companies for package delivery.
