American Adults: One in Seven Affected by Anxiety Crisis

Experts believe that the increasing number of patients can be attributed to economic uncertainty, social isolation, and overwhelming exposure to news and social media.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health in the United States has seen a significant decline, with a rise in cases of anxiety affecting around 40 million adults and depression affecting approximately 17 million adults.

Experts link the surge in generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder cases to economic uncertainty, social isolation, and the excessive exposure to news and social media.

Anxiety disorders and depression often coexist, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While an estimated one out of every six Americans may experience depression at some point, major depressive episodes are more severe.

Elizabeth Douglas, a mental health outpatient therapist, has noticed a rise in cases of anxiety disorders and depression.

“There are noticeable changes. Mental health concerns—especially anxiety, depression, and burnout—have worsened for many,” Douglas told The Epoch Times.

The American Psychiatric Association reported in May that 43 percent of people surveyed said they felt “more anxious in their lives” than a year ago. Respondents cited factors such as current events, the economy, the upcoming U.S. presidential election, and “gun violence.”

The National Institute of Mental Health found in a 2021 survey that over 21 million adults experienced major depressive episodes, with women being more susceptible, especially among young adults.

Researchers have linked social media with potential negative mental health effects across all age groups, including symptoms like depression and anxiety.

“Increased exposure to curated realities has led to feelings of inadequacy and fear of missing out,” Douglas said.

Despite these challenges, there is a positive trend emerging. More adults in the United States are seeking help for anxiety and depression, and the stigma associated with these issues is gradually diminishing.

A rising demand for mental health treatment is reflected in the 2024 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, projecting the need for more services like counseling, social work, and psychology. This sector has seen growth over the past decade, with projections of continued “strong growth” through 2032.

With this growth, there is more exploration and acceptance of innovative and nonpharmacological treatment approaches.

Dr. Nick Bach, a certified psychologist at Grace Psychological Services in Louisville, Kentucky, has observed this shift.

“I’ve found cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness techniques to be helpful for many of my clients. Learning how to ground themselves, regulate emotions, and challenge negative thinking can benefit people,” Bach shared.

Elvis Rosales, clinical director of Align Recovery Centers in California, noted an increase in clients seeking holistic therapies like acupuncture, nutritional changes, art, and music during the past year.

“This reflects an understanding that mental health care should be comprehensive, focusing on the individual’s overall well-being, not just addressing anxiety or depression symptoms,” he explained.

Experts stress the importance of continuing efforts to enhance mental health education, reduce stigma, and provide affordable treatment options.

“There is still a long way to go to ensure everyone has access to the care they need,” Rosales remarked.

“More robust mental health education, ongoing destigmatization, and affordable treatment options are crucial for maintaining this progress.”
