Anand: Federal Government Must Take a ‘Nuanced’ Approach to Retain Tech Talent in Public Sector

Treasury Board President Anita Anand emphasizes the need for Canada to adopt a “nuanced” approach when reducing its public service to safeguard the expertise of its tech workers, especially in cyber and procurement fields.

Anand stresses the importance of maintaining the number of cybersecurity and procurement professionals at a time when their skills are critical.

This statement comes shortly after the federal budget revealed that natural attrition rates will lead to a reduction of 5,000 full-time positions in the public service over the next four years.

As of March, the public service comprised approximately 368,000 employees, but Anand stated that no government ministry or agency will be exempt from the downsizing process.

Anand virtually participated in a Microsoft event in Toronto where she discussed the government’s $2.4 billion AI investments outlined in the budget.

During the event, Anand also mentioned an upcoming summit in Ottawa next month, which will involve think tanks and other stakeholders to assist in devising an AI strategy for the federal public sector.
