Arson suspected in Tasmania bushfire that endangered homes

Authorities have confirmed that the bushfire in northern Tasmania, which posed a threat to homes, was intentionally started.

The incident occurred in Ravenswood, a suburb of Launceston, and was reported at 3.20pm on March 6, leading to a watch and act alert.

Emergency crews were deployed to contain the fire, which had already consumed 184 hectares by midday on March 7.

According to Tasmania Fire Service operations officer Rick Mahnken, crews are expected to remain on-site for several days due to the moderate weather on March 7 and the high forecast for the weekend.

Investigators have determined that the bushfire, despite not causing any structural damage, was deliberately ignited. The case has now been passed on to the police for further investigation.

A smoke alert has been issued for Ravenswood.

Tasmania Police are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward and have increased officer presence in the affected area.
