Assessing the hurdles confronting CBC’s new CEO with Peter Menzies
Commentary
Marie-Philippe Bouchard is recognized as a talented and intelligent individual with a successful history in Francophone public television.
We sincerely wish her all the best in her new role as the president and CEO of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and Société Radio-Canada (SRC). Her term begins on Jan. 1, 2025, and we hope she enjoys her initial days in the position before facing the inevitable challenges ahead.
One of the major hurdles is Bouchard’s background in Francophone television, primarily at SRC and most recently as CEO of TV. While SRC has its share of criticisms, it still delivers content that resonates with its audience and serves as a viable alternative to other networks.
The bigger issues lie within the CBC, where viewership is low and public sentiment is negative. The prospect of budget cuts looms, with the potential closure of CBC’s English services under consideration.
Bouchard’s primary task will be to rebuild the trust between Canadians and the CBC. This will require more than just words; concrete actions and reforms are necessary to regain public confidence.
While the challenges ahead are daunting, Bouchard’s involvement in shaping a new mandate for CBC/SRC gives her a unique advantage in implementing necessary changes. Time is of the essence, and decisive action will be crucial in restoring faith in the institution.
