At Least 17 People Killed in Fuel Truck Accident in Southern Haiti
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti—Reports from Radio Caraibes state that a tanker truck carrying gasoline in Haiti overturned and exploded on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of at least 17 individuals and causing serious injuries to 30 others. Haitian authorities could not be reached for comment on the incident.
Haiti’s medical facilities are ill-equipped to handle individuals with severe burns. Additionally, the nation, home to 12 million people, has been grappling with fuel shortages exacerbated by gang conflicts that hinder the importation of essential goods.
The tragic event occurred in Miragoane, a town of 60,000 residents that had previously endured a powerful earthquake three years ago.
In 2021, Cap Haitien, Haiti’s second-largest city, saw a devastating incident where 75 individuals lost their lives when a fuel truck overturned, triggering a massive fire that ravaged nearby homes and businesses built in close proximity. Some of the casualties included bystanders who had rushed to the scene in an attempt to collect spilled fuel from the truck.
