At Least 32 People Killed in Drug Rehabilitation Centre Fire in Northern Iran: Iranian Media Reports
At least 32 people have been killed and 16 injured in a massive fire at a drug rehabilitation centre in northern Iran, as reported by Iranian media on Friday.
According to the semi-official Fars news agency, preliminary investigation suggests that a heater in the opium rehab camp in Langarud, located in the Caspian Sea Province of Gilan, was the cause of the fire, which quickly spread throughout the facility.
“The manager and other possible culprits have been arrested to determine the exact cause of the incident,” stated the Tasnim news site.
Iran is known to have one of the most severe addiction problems in the world, according to the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime. The country is situated on the primary trafficking route for opium and heroin, derived from poppies in Afghanistan and destined for Western Europe.
