Attack on US Marines by Mob in Turkey
The U.S. Embassy in Turkey confirmed that two service members from the USS Wasp, docked in Izmir, were ambushed and assaulted by members of a local anti-American group.
United States Marines in western Turkey were attacked by the Turkey Youth Union (TGB), a nationalist group, as confirmed by officials.
“We can confirm reports of the assault on U.S. service members aboard the USS Wasp in Izmir today, and they are now safe,” the embassy reported.
The U.S. Defense Department mentioned that the USS Wasp arrived in the region on Sept. 1 for a regular port visit after joint training with Turkish military ships in the Mediterranean.
Anti-American Group Claims Responsibility for Attack
The TGB connected the assault to the conflict between Israel and Hamas and aims to eradicate U.S. imperialism from their lands.
The group stated, “We put sacks on U.S. soldiers serving on the largest attack ship of the USA, USS Wasp, to resist their presence in our country.”
The United States has increased its military presence in the Middle East in response to ongoing unrest, including the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas that resulted in numerous casualties.
