Attorneys Present Closing Arguments in Defense of Freedom Convoy Organizers in Court

An Ottawa court is expected to hear final arguments for acquittal from the legal teams of two figureheads of the Freedom Convoy today.

Tamara Lich and Chris Barber are facing criminal charges for their involvement in organizing the protest in 2022, which attracted large crowds and thousands of big rig trucks to downtown Ottawa for weeks, in opposition to pandemic restrictions.

The two are accused of mischief, intimidation, and counseling others to break the law, but their trial has been legally complex and marked by numerous delays since it began last September.

Today is the fourth day of closing arguments, with Barber’s counsel set to speak first before Lich’s lawyers present their final statements.

Last week, Barber’s lawyer Diane Magas argued in court that her client should not be held responsible for the individual actions of protest participants.

The Crown has previously stated in court that the two knowingly went beyond legal protest boundaries into illegal mischief, but they will have the opportunity to respond to the defense arguments before the trial concludes.
