Attorneys to Part Ways with Pro-Israel Mayor of Montreal Suburb Following his Opposition to Gaza Immigration
The legal representatives of Jeremy Levi, the mayor of Montreal’s Hampstead suburb, stated their intention to drop him as a client due to concerns that his criticism of a federal immigration plan for Gazans and his strong public support of Israel in its conflict with Hamas could potentially lead to the loss of other clients, including a major teacher union in the province. This information was revealed in court documents provided by Mr. Levi.
Mr. Levi, who leads a majority-Jewish municipality, has faced backlash from the pro-Palestine movement and others over his social media comments, particularly a post on X that suggested a reevaluation of Canada’s immigration plan for Gazans due to perceived differences in values.
This post was cited as a catalyst for his former legal representatives’ decision to sever ties with him, as confirmed by a recorded phone conversation between Mr. Levi and the lawyers, obtained by The Epoch Times.
During the call, the legal representatives expressed concerns about losing other clients if they continued to represent Mr. Levi based on his public statements regarding Palestine amidst the conflict with Hamas.
One of the former representatives mentioned, “So we obviously had a conversation amongst the partners and this is the decision we arrived at, which is we could not continue this otherwise it would come at great expense to our firm.”
The lawyers, although technically still representing Mr. Levi, stated they would not refund a $50,000 fee for legal work, arguing that they had fulfilled their obligations in an unrelated case involving Quebec language laws.
Neil Oberman, of the Spiegel Sohmer law firm, now representing Mr. Levi, conveyed that Mr. Levi had filed an opposition to the withdrawal notice from the previous legal representatives.
