Austin Reiterates Strong US Support for Israel Following Gallant’s Removal
The U.S. defense secretary conveyed to Israel’s now-former defense minister that he had been a ‘trusted partner and friend.’
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to Israel’s security during a call with the country’s now-former defense minister, Yoav Gallant, just two days after his dismissal.
Austin expressed his desire to continue the strong partnership and positive working relationship with the next defense minister of Israel.
Following Gallant’s departure, former foreign minister Israel Katz assumed the role of defense minister in the country.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu terminated Gallant on Nov. 5, citing a strained working relationship and a “crisis of faith” that was impeding effective governance.
Support for Israel
During his conversation with Gallant, Austin reiterated that “The U.S. commitment to Israel’s security remains ironclad, as does our support for Israel’s right to defend itself against aggression from Iran and its partners and proxies.”
He also mentioned that the United States has increased its presence in the Middle East to protect U.S. personnel, allies, and partners, while underscoring the importance of addressing the humanitarian situation in Gaza promptly.
October Warning Letter
Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken sent a warning letter to Gallant and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer on Oct. 13 urging Israel to enhance humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip amid ongoing military operations.
The letter called for improvements in Gaza’s humanitarian situation within 30 days, with potential policy implications under NSM-20 and relevant U.S. law if not addressed by the deadline on Nov. 13.
Reports indicated that humanitarian aid entering Gaza had significantly decreased compared to previous levels.
