Australia Appoints Special Envoy to Tackle Antisemitism

Jewish communities in Australia have been exposed to chants like ‘from the river to the sea’ during pro-Palestinian demonstrations. The Albanese government has appointed a special envoy, Jillian Segal, to address antisemitism amidst the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Middle East. This decision follows calls from the Opposition to take action against antisemitism in Australia.

Since the eruption of the Israel-Hamas conflict on October 7, Australian Jewish communities have encountered antisemitic slogans at protests, including “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” The government continues to advocate for a ceasefire and supports a two-state solution at the United Nations.

In light of the conflict affecting communities nationwide, Ms. Segal’s appointment aims to ensure that Australians feel safe and included. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Immigration Minister Andrew Giles emphasize the importance of all Australians, regardless of race or religion, feeling safe and welcome in their communities, free from prejudice or discrimination.

Mr. Albanese asserts that there is no place for violence or hatred in Australia, emphasizing the need for unity during such challenging times. The appointment of an envoy is crucial to ease tensions in Australia amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Albanese Pushes Back on Judicial Inquiry

Responding to inquiries about the necessity for a judicial inquiry into antisemitism, Mr. Albanese states, “You don’t need an inquiry to know there has been a rise in antisemitism at some of the universities.” The government’s appointment of an envoy is seen as a proactive step to address the issue promptly.

Ms. Segal, with her background in leadership roles within the Jewish community, is viewed as a strong advocate for combating antisemitism in Australia. Current ECAJ President Daniel Aghion expresses full support for the envoy appointment in response to the surge of antisemitism since October 7, 2023.

Mr. Aghion stresses the importance of countering antisemitism in various sectors of society and believes that the envoy will propose effective policies and initiatives to combat it. He praises Ms. Segal’s appointment and her capacity to handle the role with integrity and distinction.

Liberal Jewish MP Julian Leeser Calls for Investigation

Jewish Liberal Member for Berowra Julian Leeser commends the government’s appointment of Ms. Segal as a tangible step to combat antisemitism. He urges support for a judicial inquiry into antisemitism in Australian universities and other sectors. Mr. Leeser emphasizes that the government must take action based on the envoy’s recommendations.

Ms. Segal acknowledges the significance of addressing antisemitism in Australia to ensure the safety and rights of Jewish Australians. She stresses the challenging environment faced by the Jewish community due to the increase in antisemitism.

Minister Andrew Giles reaffirms the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards prejudice and hatred, emphasizing the commitment to tackling antisemitism effectively with the appointment of Ms. Segal.
