Australia’s Internet Regulator Decides to Close Case Against X Involving Stabbing Video
Julie Inman Grant, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, has decided to withdraw Federal Court action against Elon Musk’s X Corp for not removing footage of a stabbing in a Sydney church. This move is seen as a consolidation of cases, with the matter now being pursued in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.
The eSafety office had requested X Corp to remove approximately 60 instances of the stabbing footage involving Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel at the Wakely church. While X Corp complied by blocking the posts within Australia, they did not remove the videos internationally, leading to the legal action.
Despite Elon Musk’s public opposition to the eSafety Commissioner’s order, X Corp stuck to its decision not to take down the graphic videos globally.
After facing setbacks in court regarding jurisdiction, Julie Inman Grant has chosen to pursue a resolution through the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. This decision aims to ensure the online safety of all Australians, especially children.
eSafety Commissioner stands by the necessity of the removal notice issued to X Corp, emphasizing the goal to prevent the circulation of violent content that could incite further harm.
While X Corp has removed similar content in the past upon request, their refusal in this case has prompted legal action. The abandonment of the case in the Federal Court may result in significant legal costs for the eSafety office.
