Barbara Kay: Ottawa’s Support Should Go to Canadian Muslim Groups Condemning Hamas, not Anti-Semitic Ones, Suggests Writer

Commentary

Canadian Jews are concerned about their physical safety and also feel a sense of civic isolation. Initial sympathy for the victims of Hamas’s atrocities waned quickly, followed by a backlash—mostly targeting Jews and led by pro-Hamas Canadian Muslims.

Many Christian and secular Canadians condemned the Oct. 7 atrocities, providing some comfort. However, Hamas’s actions were deeply anti-Semitic, requiring a response from prominent Muslim leaders similar to what happened after 9/11, which did not occur.
The government’s approach to addressing anti-Semitism and Islamophobia exacerbates concerns among the Jewish community. While Justin Trudeau often condemns anti-Semitism, he rarely does so without also addressing Islamophobia, despite the differing severity of the issues.
