BC Conservatives Propose Tax Credit for Housing Expenses While NDP Commits to Health Care Improvements on Campaign Trail

The Conservative Party of BC is pledging to introduce a tax rebate for housing costs, while the NDP has unveiled reforms for health care as both parties campaign for the Oct. 19 election.

Conservative Party leader John Rustad revealed the rebate plan in Surrey on Sept. 23, stating it would provide relief for renters and homeowners. If elected as premier, Rustad plans to offer a $3,000 per month tax rebate for housing costs.

“People are struggling to cover the high costs of housing with their post-tax income,” Rustad said in a press release.

The proposed rebate will commence with Budget 2026, exempting $1,500 per month initially and increasing by $500 annually until it reaches $3,000 a month, targeting middle-class taxpayers for relief. The party has stated that the plan will not exceed $900 million for Budget 2026.

“This is not just a temporary fix,” Rustad emphasized. “This is significant relief for hardworking British Columbians feeling the strain of rising housing costs.”

Meanwhile, NDP leader David Eby announced that if his party is re-elected, they will focus on enabling faster access to family doctors for more individuals.

“There is a need for more doctors and reduced wait times to ensure common conditions are treated promptly and hospital stays are minimized,” Eby stated in Burnaby on Sept. 23.

Eby outlined his party’s plan to expand the responsibilities of pharmacists to include testing and prescribing for conditions like strep throat and providing referrals for UTI testing.

The NDP also aims to reduce doctors’ administrative workload, increase physician assistant numbers, and offer provisional licenses to domestically trained doctors, nurses, and midwives, with overseas-trained professionals eligible for licenses within six weeks.

Eby stated that his party has already made progress in connecting more people with family doctors.

“Our efforts are yielding results, and these new initiatives will expedite connections to healthcare for more individuals. We are striving for a province where everyone has access to quality care,” he added.

The official B.C. election campaign period commenced on Sept. 21, with the election scheduled for Oct. 19.
