BC Court Receives Class Action Lawsuit Against Province and Ottawa Over Safe Supply
A class action lawsuit has been filed in B.C. Supreme Court this week alleging that both the provincial and federal governments are responsible for the addictions and, in one tragic case, the death of adolescents who gained access to diverted safer supply drugs.
According to Global News, the civil claim was brought by family members on behalf of two teenage girls. One girl is currently in treatment for addiction, and the other tragically passed away due to an overdose.
The teenagers, 17-year-old Amelie North and 14-year-old Kamilah Sword from Port Coquitlam, B.C., were best friends.
The claim states, “Kamilah and Amelie relied on negligent misrepresentations to start using the Safe Supply Drugs, believing they were safe, and continued to rely on these misrepresentations throughout their addictions.”
Amelie’s family has blamed the B.C. government’s prescribed drug supply program for leading her into addiction and treatment.
