BC Files Class-Action Lawsuit Against Manufacturers of ‘Forever Chemicals’
The British Columbia government has initiated a class-action lawsuit against manufacturers of “forever chemicals” responsible for widespread contamination of drinking-water systems.
Attorney General Niki Sharma announced that the province is the first Canadian jurisdiction to sue producers of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances.
B.C. previously filed class-action lawsuits against tobacco manufacturers in 1998 and opioid makers in 2018 to recoup health-care costs linked to those substances.
Ms. Sharma stated that the suit aims to hold accountable companies that created and profited from these chemicals.
According to the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, these chemicals have been used in various consumer goods such as non-stick cookware and cleaning products.
Research by the institute indicates that exposure to these chemicals may result in childhood obesity, weakened immune systems, and certain types of cancer.
