BC United Opposes Name Changes for Convicted Dangerous Offenders
Opposition BC United Leader Kevin Falcon is advocating to prevent individuals convicted of dangerous criminal offenses from legally changing their names.
Falcon has introduced a private member’s bill in the legislature to amend the British Columbia Name Act after discovering that convicted child-killer Allan Schoenborn had recently been allowed to change his name legally.
Schoenborn, who was found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder for the 2008 murders of his three children in Merritt, B.C., has changed his name, although his new identity has not been disclosed to the public.
Falcon asserts that the NDP government has the authority under the Name Act to prohibit name changes, but failed to do so in Schoenborn’s case. Schoenborn has been detained at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Coquitlam, B.C., since 2010.
Falcon’s Name Amendment Act proposed by the Opposition aims to automatically restrict individuals designated as dangerous or long-term offenders under the Criminal Code from applying to change their name.
Premier David Eby has indicated that he will review the current name-change legislation since individuals should not be able to escape accountability for criminal offenses by altering their names.
