Bird flu outbreak in NSW leads to culling of 240K birds and biosecurity emergency plan implementation
An emergency biosecurity plan has been activated, but NSW Premier Chris Minns assures there is “no reason to panic.”
A farm in the Hawkesbury district of New South Wales (NSW) detected avian influenza, leading to the culling of nearly 240,000 birds.
The NSW government swiftly implemented an emergency biosecurity incident plan to contain the H7N8 strain of avian influenza at the affected poultry egg farm.
Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty confirmed the depopulation of the farm following Australian Veterinary guidelines and the lockdown of the affected farm.
Moreover, a control order has been issued to restrict the movement of machinery, animals, and transport within a two-kilometre radius, affecting three large poultry farms and potentially 355,000 birds.
The government is coordinating with federal authorities, the egg industry, and neighboring states to provide necessary support during this challenging time.
No Need to Panic: Premier
Premier Chris Minns reassured NSW residents that the virus is contained to a single site, urging people not to panic. Health Minister Ryan Park emphasized the low risk of human transmission of the virus.
Meanwhile, in Victoria, over one million birds will be culled to stop the spread of bird flu. The H7N3 strain was detected at a commercial egg farm, prompting movement restrictions and support for affected poultry farmers.
Consumers need not worry about egg and poultry product safety, as authorities confirm the supply chain remains secure. Australia’s Food Safety Regulator reiterated the safety of consuming properly handled poultry products.
Experts suggest the low risk of avian flu transmission to humans, but emphasize the need for continued vigilance.
