Blinken: U.S. Advocates for ‘Immediate Ceasefire’ in Gaza with Draft Resolution Submission.
Antony Blinken, Secretary of State, stated in an interview with Saudi broadcaster Al-Hadath in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on March 20, that the United States had proposed a draft resolution to the U.N. Security Council for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza in exchange for the release of hostages held by Hamas.
While on an official tour of the Middle East, Mr. Blinken met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to address the deteriorating situation in Gaza and the escalating humanitarian crisis.
He emphasized the urgency of the ceasefire proposal, stating that it would provide immediate relief to those suffering in Gaza, including children, women, and men. The Secretary of State also mentioned the potential for increased humanitarian aid to reach those in need and the possibility of establishing a lasting ceasefire.
Furthermore, Mr. Blinken stressed the importance of focusing on protecting civilians and providing them with humanitarian assistance, while maintaining unwavering support for Israel’s right to self-defense.
Despite several failed negotiations, Mr. Blinken expressed optimism about the possibility of a ceasefire in the near future, although he highlighted the need for Hamas to accept the terms proposed by the United States.
President Joe Biden previously suggested the likelihood of a ceasefire before Ramadan, only to retract his statement later. Gaza Health Ministry reported more than 31,000 casualties since the conflict began in October, while Israel currently holds 134 hostages, including soldiers and civilians.
