Body of American Tourist Discovered on Greek Island, 3 Fellow Tourists Still Unaccounted for
ATHENS, Greece—Local media reported that a missing American tourist was discovered deceased on a beach on a small Greek island west of Corfu.
The man’s body was found on Sunday on a rocky and fairly remote beach on the island of Mathraki by another tourist. He had been reported missing on Thursday by his Greek-American friend who was his host. The tourist was last seen on Tuesday at a cafe with two female tourists who have since left the island.
No additional information about the victim, such as name or hometown, was immediately available.
Mathraki, with a population of 100, is a 3.9-square-kilometer (1.2-square-mile) heavily wooded island situated west of the more popular Corfu.
This incident is part of a series of recent cases where tourists on Greek islands have either passed away or gone missing, with some setting out on hikes in extreme hot temperatures.
A 74-year-old Dutch tourist was found on Saturday by a fire department drone lying face down in a ravine about 300 meters (330 yards) from where he was last seen last Sunday, struggling with the scorching heat.
