Calgary Mayor Praises Decreased Water Usage Following Pipeline Break
Calgarians showed their community spirit by conserving water over the weekend following a significant water main break last week.
Mayor Jyoti Gondek announced on June 10 that the city’s water usage decreased by approximately 30% compared to before the break occurred.
“I’m extremely impressed with the efforts of Calgarians,” she remarked.
Calgary was placed under a water emergency after a major feeder main ruptured in the city’s northwest on Wednesday night.
On Sunday, the city’s population of 1.6 million used 457 million liters of water, a notable decrease from the 650 million liters used on the day before the break.
This reduction surpassed the 25% cut suggested by Ms. Gondek the previous week.
Ms. Gondek recommended that residents reduce flushing the toilet by five times a day and turn off showers while soaping up.
“These are measures we typically take while camping. Let’s revisit those memories,” she suggested.
Water restrictions may continue for a few more days as repairs are anticipated to be time-consuming. Additionally, one neighborhood is currently under a boil-water advisory.
