Canada Government Plans High-Speed Rail Linking Toronto and Quebec City
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces Ottawa’s initial investment of $3.9 billion for the development phase of a high-speed rail network in the Toronto-Quebec City corridor, with a projected six-year construction timeline.
“We hear too often about delays or the lack of a special railway line for passengers. This is going to change. Today, I’m announcing the launching of Alto, the greatest, most ambitious infrastructure project in history,” Trudeau stated at a press conference in Quebec on Feb. 19.
The high-speed rail is expected to reduce travel times by around half, enabling passengers to travel from Montreal to Toronto in three hours, compared to the current five-hour car journey.
The PMO anticipates that the train network will generate over 51,000 jobs during construction and boost GDP by up to $35 billion annually.
The construction consortium Cadence, comprised of CDPQ Infra, SYSTRA Canada, Keolis Canada, and AtkinsRéalis, formerly known as SNC-Lavalin, has been selected to oversee the project.
This is a developing story, updates will follow.
