Canada Imposes Sanctions on 10 Additional Individuals in Russia in Response to Conflict with Ukraine Prior to Anniversary.


Canada is imposing sanctions on 10 individuals and 153 entities in response to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which is approaching its second anniversary this weekend.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly revealed the new sanctions against Russia in collaboration with the United States and the United Kingdom today.

On February 23, the U.S. declared sanctions against over 500 individuals and entities, while the U.K. added 50 to its own list.

Russia initiated its military invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has confirmed the deaths of more than 10,500 Ukrainian civilians and the injury of nearly 20,000 individuals in the conflict.

The individuals and entities being sanctioned by Canada include a close aide to President Vladimir Putin and businessmen involved in industries such as rail, construction, and IT.

Canada is also broadening the scope of its export restrictions on goods used for weapon manufacturing to specifically prohibit the export of explosives and detonators, commonly used in the mining and construction industries.
