Canada Post Strike Continues into 12th Day with Ongoing Negotiations
Canada Post has reported missing out on delivering an estimated 10 million parcels due to a strike involving over 55,000 workers nationwide just before Black Friday.
Company representative Lisa Liu stated on Monday that talks with the union over the weekend made limited progress, as Canada Post aims to urgently discuss changes to its delivery model.
Conversely, a union spokesperson mentioned that the focus of negotiations is on safeguarding jobs, as the Crown corporation seeks to retract rights and benefits achieved over decades.
A key issue in the bargaining process has been the expansion of parcel deliveries into the weekend, but there is a disagreement between the union and Canada Post on how to implement this change.
Canada Post has been facing competition from other delivery providers and recorded a $315 million loss before tax in the third quarter. Weekend deliveries have been suggested as a means to increase revenue.
Ottawa has appointed a special mediator to aid in the negotiations between Canada Post and the union.
