Canada Refrains from Recognizing Palestine at UN, Considers Statehood without Prior Peace Agreement

Canada has decided to abstain from yet another United Nations vote that aims to formally recognize Palestine, while also leaving the option open to support statehood before the current conflict ends.

The federal Liberals have also announced additional sanctions against Hamas and Iran, but have not fulfilled a promise made three months ago to sanction West Bank settlers.

In a vote this morning at the UN General Assembly, there was a wide majority in favor of granting the Palestinian delegation more procedural rights in UN forums and urging the Security Council to reconsider blocking Palestine from becoming a full member state.

Canada chose to abstain along with 24 other countries, stating that they did not want to completely reject the moment in order to avoid supporting Israel’s efforts to prevent a two-state solution.

In a statement, Canada expressed its intention to recognize the State of Palestine at a time that would be most conducive to lasting peace, noting that this recognition might not necessarily wait until a final peace agreement with Israel is reached.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly announced new sanctions targeting four individuals in Iran who have been accused by Ottawa of providing military training and resources to support Hamas.
