Canada Revenue Agency Terminate 330 Employees Due to CERB Claims Amidst Pandemic
The Canada Revenue Agency announces that it has dismissed 330 employees for improperly receiving the Canada Emergency Response Benefit during the pandemic, marking the conclusion of an internal review.
In June 2023, the CRA initiated an internal review of employees who received CERB despite their ineligibility for the benefit, identifying 600 employees for further scrutiny.
The CERB, which provided $2,000 per month to Canadians who lost their jobs due to public health restrictions during the pandemic, was the subject in question.
The agency states that 185 individuals were not fired for collecting CERB, although 40 of them faced disciplinary action such as suspension.
Furthermore, 135 employees were determined to be eligible for CERB and therefore did not face any repercussions.
Some employees met the eligibility criteria as students or term employees.
The CRA indicates that employees who improperly received CERB must repay the benefits they received.
The agency notes that a few ongoing cases, involving employees on medical or extended unpaid leave, will require additional time to resolve.
