Canada Unites in Support of the Edmonton Oilers as the Nation’s Team

The Edmonton Oilers are now considered Canada’s team, as fans from all over the country rally behind them as the Stanley Cup finals get underway.

According to an exclusive Global News-Ipsos survey, the Oilers have the support of 57 percent of Canadians, as they face off against the Florida Panthers. Only 9 percent of those surveyed are backing the Panthers.

Of those supporting the Oilers, 68 percent see them as “Canada’s team,” including 72 percent of fans from other Canadian teams.

However, support varies among fans of rival teams. The highest percentage of support for the Oilers comes from Winnipeg Jets fans at 78 percent. Calgary Flames fans follow closely at 74 percent, while Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs fans are at 72 percent.

Support for the Oilers is lowest among Vancouver Canucks fans at 62 percent, possibly due to the Oilers beating the Canucks in the Western Hockey Finals. On the other hand, 23 percent of Canucks fans are now rooting for the Panthers.

Montreal Canadiens fans show the second-lowest level of support for the Oilers at 64 percent.
