Canadian Chamber of Commerce Reports Continued Uncertainty and Turmoil Due to Tariff Delay
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce expresses concern over the decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to postpone tariffs on Canadian goods bound for the U.S., leaving businesses, workers, and families uncertain.
Candace Laing, the Chamber’s chief executive, notes that despite the delay, the threat of tariffs still looms, causing ongoing turmoil and uncertainty.
Laing emphasizes that the extension provides Canadian businesses and governments with an opportunity to emphasize the irrationality of tariffs.
The U.S. had planned to enforce tariffs on Canadian imports before Trump’s announcement of a 30-day pause following discussions with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Trump’s tariff threats were a response to what he deemed as Canada’s failure to address illegal border activities, such as the influx of people and drugs.
Prime Minister Trudeau mentioned a positive conversation with Trump, discussing the implementation of a $1.3-billion border plan involving helicopter patrols, the appointment of a “fentanyl czar,” designation of drug cartels as terrorist entities, and the establishment of a Canada-U.S. joint strike force to combat organized crime.
