Canadian Charities Concerned About Potential Impact of Canada Post Strike on Fundraising Activities

Some B.C. charities and not-for-profits express concerns that the Canada Post strike could impact their year-end fundraising efforts.

Nicole Mucci, a spokesperson for Union Gospel Mission in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, mentions that 50 percent of the organization’s revenue typically comes in between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and a mail strike during this period is “detrimental” as many donations are received by mail.

Mucci expresses support for the postal workers’ cause and hopes for a prompt resolution while also looking into alternative methods to engage with donors.

Canada Post employees initiated a strike on Friday after failing to reach a mutually acceptable agreement with their employer.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers reports that approximately 55,000 workers are participating in the strike due to limited progress in the negotiation process.

Gregory Ould, co-founder of Vancouver-based charity Blanket BC Society, expresses concerns that the strike may affect the organization’s ability to assist families, refugees, and homeless individuals during the winter, as they rely on substantial donations from a Canadian mattress company received through the mail.
