Canadian Diplomat Reports One Missing and Two Rescued in Taiwan Earthquake Zone


Taiwan’s top diplomat in Ottawa has reported that a Canadian individual is missing following the recent powerful earthquake on the island. Fortunately, two tourists from Canada have been rescued from a national park.

The representative of Taiwan in Canada, Harry Tseng, has limited information about the missing person but confirms that the rescued Canadians, previously located on a hiking trail in the Taroko Gorge, have only minor injuries.

Efforts are underway to locate the missing individual by the end of April 4, as mentioned by Mr. Tseng.

According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency referred by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, three Canadians have been rescued from the earthquake zone while a fourth remains missing.

Global Affairs Canada has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the situation.

A statement posted on Taiwan’s firefighting service’s Facebook page on April 3 indicated that two Canadians were among a group stranded due to rock slides on a trail in Taroko National Park, a popular hiking site.

The Central Emergency Operations Centre of Taiwan mentioned that the 7.2-magnitude earthquake on April 3, originating off Hualien County, 150 kilometers south of Taipei, resulted in 10 casualties, 705 trapped individuals, 11 missing persons, and 1,099 injuries.

Mr. Tseng expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and concern extended by Canadian authorities, showcasing the strong bond between Canada and Taiwan. He assured that the worst is behind them now.

He emphasized the resilience and strength shown by the people of Taiwan and expressed hope for a quick return to normalcy for all affected individuals.
